JCPZ FOOD GARDENS: ORANGE FARM AND DIEPSLOOT

Johannesburg City Parks appointed NLA to devlop a comprehensive, sustainable and highly functional urban agriculture model. The brief for the 'Food Gardens' required a design which would contribute to food security and, alleviate poverty through profitable communal based farming.

The project focussed on two areas â€“ a small scale urban project in Orange Farm to the south of Johannesburg, and a larger more commercial project south west of Diepsloot on a portion of land adjacent to the sewerage works on Northern Farm.

The initiative by JCPZ to provide food gardens in areas such as Orange Farm and Diepsloot, provided the opportunity to enhance resident's lives through improved food security and designed everyday places. The landscape design approach for this project was both functional, and aimed to provide places for the workers within the food gardens, which are conducive to their social and cultural needs. Places to eat, rest, meet and

socialise.
